New York Chef’s Prefer Hauppauge

June 14th, 2010

Hauppauge, New York is a hamlet in both the town of Islip and the town of Smithtown. Hauppauge, is a quiet industrious town where anyone visiting or traveling through will find a great meal, no matter what time of day or night. It seems that a good majority of the restaurants in Hauppauge are run by chef’s from New York City in search of a quieter, more family friendly area with which to set-up their kitchens. All of the restaurants listed below are withing walking distance to any of the Hauppauge hotels

Branchinellis, an Italian restaurant, open 7 days a week and located at 555 Route 111, and has the best eggplant rollatini in New York. The food is excellent, consistent and well prepared. Their portions are generous, like their famous chicken Parmesan, which can feed 2 people or a small nation, plus the chicken is juicy and perfectly cooked, the sauce is not over powering. The establishment is always packed with locals enjoying great Italian cuisine; and you know, if the locals eat there, it must be good. They don’t take reservations, so it’s wise to come in just ahead of the dinner or lunch crowd, or after, but you can always enjoy a drink at the bar while you wait for a table.

Then there’s Cielo’s restaurant , located at 321 Nesconset-Port Jefferson Hwy. This is another of Hauppauge’s Italian restaurants and also popular with the locals. Fine, casual dining is Cielo’s expertise run by Chef Mike, who took over ownership back in 2006 after the original owner’s: the Polini’s retired. Chef Mike has continued the same excellent cuisine and service the the Polini’s did, but he had taken the ambiance and the menu to the next level, making the dining experience even better than it was. It’s obvious that Chef Mike isn’t resting on the old Polini’s reputation, but has raised the standards to a new high for any other restaurant to match, including the variety of the menu, the pricing, the presentation, the quality and the friendliness and efficiency of the staff.

For something different than Italian, try ‘Brennans Irish Pub’, located on 546 Route 111. Brennans appetizers during happy hour include steak tidbits, fried mozzarella, pesto sticks, and buffalo bits - all of which are half-price. Brennans is on the edge of the Hauppauge Industrial area, which is perfect for the after-work crowd or for meetings with clients, whom will be impressed with Brennans 12-ounce marinated shell steak. This establishment has a real pub atmosphere and has been around for 5 years. Guinness and Bass are on tap and you might catch a real Irish band playing a jig or two.

If steak sounds good, try Paces Steakhouse , their signature steaks are a cut above the rest in every single way. When you bite into one, you’ll know why. They pay a great amount of attention to their steaks long before they make it to your table. They select the finest shells available that come directly from the market docks in New York City’s famous meat packing district. Then with weeks of careful aging, in their specially constructed aging rooms, the tender cuts of prime beef will rival the best old steak houses in New York City.

Learning About Rexton Hearing Aids

November 19th, 2009

One of the things that I am very thankful about my job is that there is always something new to learn.  I have been working as a hearing specialist for almost fifteen years now, and I dare say that there hasn’t been a dull day yet.  I love working with the public and it is nice to have the opportunity to touch people’s lives and make them better.

I am also a big proponent of continued learning and my work gives me that opportunity.  You see, there seems to be an unending list of innovations and new products on the market within the hearing aid niche, and therefore it is my job to keep up with them.

Today I have been spending most of my downtime learning about some of the new hearing aids offered by Rexton.  Truth be told, we haven’t carried them for a long time, but customers have been very happy with them.

It is nice too that they provide us with regular updates on the projects they are working on, and let us know what their upcoming models will be.  It has helped in a number of situations where a customer needs a certain feature for their hearing aid, and I can let them know if and when it will be available.  They are definitely one of my favorite brands to work with.

How Many People Does It Take To Buy a Boat?

November 18th, 2009

I have been thinking about going in on a big purchase with a group of friends. We want to buy a boat together. We would make sure that we all invested the same amount of money and all had access to the boat for the same amount of time throughout the year. I think it’s do-able. However I’m not quite sure how many of us should be involved in the process.

If there are too many of us involved in owning this boat then I think it’s going to get out of hand. The more people there are, the more internal group fighting there will be over who gets the boat when and other such details. With fewer people, there will be less drama. Nevertheless, there has to be enough of us involved in the purchase that the cost per person is feasible for each of us to pay.

Just as important as how many people should be involved is the decision about which people should be involved. We definitely need at least one person who knows about boats. We need someone who can tell when something is wrong with the lower unit and can buy the right new mercury outboard parts as needed and all of that. We also need someone who is organized with finances to make sure that the purchase is handled properly and that all fees are paid on time. I’m not either of those people so there has to be at least three of us. How many people do you think is a good amount to go in on a boat purchase together as a group?

Happy Halloween — College Style!

October 31st, 2009

Today is Halloween, and boy does it brings back memories!  I’ve celebrated Halloween only sporadically since I was a teenager, but I still have some good memories of the holiday.

For instance, my roommate in college loved to celebrate Halloween — and her favorite costume was, of course, the sexy schoolgirl costume.  She could usually make that costume just out of stuff  she had in her own closet, as she dressed in short skirts, tight T-shirts, and boots on a regular basis (though not always all at the same time).

Fast forward several years — I share my house now not with a roommate, but with my husband.  My diploma and frame is on the wall, with my graduation picture in a frame right next to it.  We passed out candy to trick-or-treaters our first year in our house, but after that our second dog wasn’t as good about people knocking on the door, so we haven’t dared to pass out candy since.

This year we will probably take hubby’s nephews trick-or-treating, since their dad is in Afghanistan and their mom works that night.  It’ll be fun to do something with the kids for a change — after all, kids are what Halloween is all about!

Buy Halloween Costumes Kids Can Wear Again

October 16th, 2009

halloweenHalloween costumes can feel like an unnecessary expense to parents especially since kids usually only wear them once. However, these costumes are really important to kids so they’re worth the cost. To make it seem more worth it to you, try to buy costumes that your kids can wear more than one time.

Your best bet is to help your child create a costume that can incorporate normal clothing into it. For example, look for whimsical children’s dresses available through designers like Jean Bourget and Deux Par Deux. Dress these up with some cheap accessories like angel’s wings, tiaras, glitter, magic wands, dress-up heels and make-up. You’ve got a fairy princess, a pageant winner or an angel. You’ve also got a basic dress that your daughter can wear more than once this holiday season.

If you can’t get basics that your kids can wear again then try to convince your kids to go with timeless costumes that they may want to repeat again in the future. A large witch’s dress can be worn by kids multiple times. It can also be worn by one child and then worn a few years later by a younger sibling. A smart investment in a good costume will make you feel like you aren’t wasting money but you will still create a happy Halloween for your kids.
